AI Takes the Podium: The Cutting Edge Tech Behind the Olympics

Written by Vicky Papa | Jul 31, 2024 3:36:17 PM

This week, two things are at the forefront of my mind: ServiceNow's latest earnings call and, like just about everyone else, the Olympics.

Let’s start with ServiceNow's latest earnings call. ServiceNow announced that it outperformed its guidance across all top-line and profitability metrics. It is leveraging AI and machine learning technologies extensively to boost the potency of its solutions, which is fueling strong performances across each of its key businesses.👏👏

In the market, I continue to see AI as a driving force for business transformation across all sectors. C-level executives are consistently asking their organizations, 'What is your AI strategy?' and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is embracing this vision as well. In preparation for the Olympics, the IOC published an 18-page ‘Olympics AI Agenda’ to address their AI plan in 2024. I find it fascinating to see how their vision has actually materialized in practice.

So in case you haven’t been following, here are some of the most interesting AI applications that I’ve seen at the games so far:

Fan Experience

  • Commentators now have access to AI-based motion-tracking technology that monitors athletes’ positions during events like canoe sprints, marathons, race walks, cycling (road races and time trials), mountain biking, marathon swimming, rowing, sailing, and triathlon. This technology allows commentators to provide viewers with real-time data on each athlete’s performance

  • AI-powered replays will be used across 12 competitions, including beach volleyball under the Eiffel Tower and tennis at Roland Garros Stadium, home of the French Open.

  • Additionally, there are cameras in beach volleyball that capture data on player movements and ball trajectories; and AI algorithms to produce 3D models of dives, allowing for more data to keep viewers informed… and entertained.

Olympian Experience

  • Athletes benefit from a new chatbot on the Athlete365 platform, which assists them with FAQs on social media guidelines, anti-doping rules, and Rule 50 regulations.
  • Recyclable, AI-controlled beds can be customized to ensure optimal rest and recovery.

Safety and Security

  • AI-controlled cameras and drones are employed for mass video surveillance, detecting suspicious movements and alerting the authorities when necessary.

But wait, there’s more! The IOC is testing out some more “interesting” AI applications, like talent identification scouts and an AI clone of broadcaster Al Michael’s voice.

I suspect this is just the beginning. AI is positioned to play an increasingly significant role in future Olympics, especially in areas like sustainability and fan engagement.
